Building a Support System for the World with AI and Robots
The dialogue about the future of robots and AI is heavily biased towards disaster scenarios. We haven’t even begun to think of all of the benefits that we can gain. Building a support system for the world could rapidly transform humanity into a much more peaceful and loving race. I’m going to outline what I believe will be the most transformative use of AI and robots in the future.
We need to start with people first. We are limited as humans. We have limited energy, time, and resources. Even the most loving and caring person in the world sometimes gets cranky or apathetic when tired.
Robots and AI have no such limitations. They can show us unlimited love, care, and support.
We could use future AI and robot technology to create a world where people suffer less than they do now. A support system of robots to help people dealing from illness or suffering of any sort.
How many people in the world have had times where they were ill and alone? Millions (and billions and trillions etc. if you think of each generation’s cumulative suffering.)
We don’t have the human capacity to support and care for every person who is suffering in this world. But we can make an intelligent system of robots using advanced AI that can be the loving backbone of the world.
We have a chance to live in perfect harmony with our technology. To use our future intelligent machines in a way that reduces the suffering in the world.
We’ve all seen movies where the robots start turning against humanity.
I see a different future.
A future where our robots and AI are one of the deepest sources of love, support, and companionship in the world.
How Would We Do It?
How would we make this system? By creating intelligent robots that can sense.
These robots would be able to pick up on our emotions and biological state in order to support us. They would be able to sense when the elderly man is about to fall and catch him before he gets hurt. They would be able to sense when you are stressed and offer their assistance. They would be able to sense when you are hungry based on your usual eating patterns and body state so offer to prepare food or assist in food preparations. But most of all they would be able to listen and respond.
If we’re upset it helps to have someone to talk to but many of us don’t have that or it’s not consistent. Most of us have friends but even the best of friends aren’t available 24/7 and aren’t always feeling good 100% of the time.
An intelligent AI based robot would be able to support people with their issues. It would drastically help people struggling with physical/mental health.
The failure of mental and physical health services usually is based on a lack of people, funding, and the type of treatment given. The advantage of an AI robot-based system of support is that it is more objective than a human. People have all kinds of biases, and limitations on energy and concentration etc. An intelligent robot does not have these limitations and in many cases will be better than a human at supporting people.
An AI support system could also serve as a sort of coach to help you achieve your goals. They could motivate and assist you in whatever goals you want to achieve such as getting physically fitter or studying for an exam or completing a work project.
In order for AI robot helpers to be safe they would have to not harm any form of life human or otherwise. They’d also have to have the ability to override any malicious commands. This would probably be the hardest part of creating intelligent AI robot helpers that are safe to use in day to day life.
Furthermore, they would have to be used democratically. To have to pay for the use of the robots defeats their purpose. If we want a support system for the world we would need to make them available to all families in the world.
Why It’s Inevitable
We have already seen the use of robots in military combat situations and wars. We have a choice for the future: We can either militarise robots or use them to create a world at peace by having them support us.
Intelligent robots are inevitable because they already exist in less intelligent forms right now. We have already witnessed the birth of robots and AI; it is happening right now.
An intelligent loving AI robot-based support system is one of the best ways to stop the risk of robots being weaponised and there being new world wars based around the use of robot fighters. Loving robots that are intelligent and kind will help people. When people are seen, heard, and helped, they become more peaceful and are less likely to want to wage war. This makes it crucial that we quickly adapt to thinking of robots as a way to support humanity emotionally and physically. When we view AI intelligent robots as a means to support our world and make it a more peaceful and loving place to live in, then we will be able to create a system whereby we and the world are taken care of by our intelligent AI robot friends.
